Welcome to St. Luke's College St. Luke's College, located in Sioux City, Iowa, is a health-system-affiliated institution of higher education committed to educating competent and compassionate healthcare professionals. We have been training successful healthcare professionals for over a century. St. Luke's College offers associate of science degrees in nursing, radiologic technology and respiratory care, as well as certificate programs in medical technology and phlebotomy. Advanced speciality certifications are available in computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography and ultrasound. St. Luke's College Announces Phlebotomy Program St. Luke's College announces the start of its Phlebotomy Certificate Program this spring. This program is the only one of its kind to be offered in the Sioux City area. The program is currently in the approval process by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The goal of the program is to provide the community and region with qualified, professional phlebotomists while enhancing and promoting the role of the phlebotomist within the healthcare industry and to the public. Rapid advances in the health care delivery system have increased the need for highly skilled phlebotomists. Job opportunities currently exceed the supply of well-trained phlebotomists. The primary function of the phlebotomist is the collection of patient blood specimens for laboratory analysis. The specimens are used to diagnose and manage medical conditions. The phlebotomist also assists in the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens and may be involved in additional laboratory functions, such as data entry and specimen processing. "The need for skilled phlebotomists in the area and across the nation currently exceeds the supply" says Pam Briese, Director of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science Education. Jobs are available in hospital laboratories, clinics, and reference laboratories. Completion of this program enables the student to take a national certifying exam which permits greater advancement and mobility in the job market. "Employers are more likely to hire an applicant who has completed a phlebotomy program and obtained certification than an applicant who requires the employer to provide on-the-job training. A phlebotomy program of this type benefits employers, employees, and patients by elevating quality of care" says Briese. The Phlebotomy Certificate Program at St. Luke's College will include both classroom and clinical experiences. The program will be offered twice a year beginning in May of 2008. The classroom portion extends over a four week period with 40 hours of content delivered in an evening/Saturday format. During this portion of the program, students will learn phlebotomy theory and principles and incorporate techniques through hands-on activities. Students then move to the three week clinical portion of the program at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff Family Medical Clinic, and other clinical sites. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take national certifying exams. The Phlebotomy Certificate Program starts May 28, 2008.
